About the Network

The Chaddick Institute is pleased to sponsor the reorganization of the Municipal Design Review Network as a formal program of the Institute with a newly dedicated Advisory Committee. The Municipal Design Review Network ("MDRN") had been operating for several years as a unique network for Chicago area communities with design review boards or staff professionals to share and develop best practices.

The MDRN was organized by John Hedrick, a consulting attorney who serves as a Senior Advisor at Chaddick, with events being coordinated by member volunteers. Recognizing the growth of the Network to almost 100 communities and approximately 200 individual participants, MDRN leaders met with Chaddick Institute staff in 2011 to formulate a strategic plan for growth. These discussions culminated with the appointment of a formal Advisory Committee to guide the Network, and the mutual commitment from MDRN volunteers and Chaddick Institute staff to provide continued and expanded programming.

Mission Statement

To educate and assist municipalities and design professionals in conducting more effective design review – through development of best practices and procedures – with the ultimate goal of improving the design quality of individual structures and the built environment.

In Principle

Members believe that design review can be a valuable and effective process if conducted in an objective, fair and legal manner which respects both individual property rights and community interests.

In Practice

Individual architectural projects should be considered in context, regardless of architectural style, based on the proposition that economic vitality and community stability is best sustained by a coherent, physical framework.

Member participation in the Municipal Design Review Network does not represent a municipal endorsement of MDRN activities. The opinions expressed by network members are those of the individuals and not the local governments.
